Opportune detections of global P-wave propagation from microseisms interferometry

چکیده

Global seismological observations are sensitive to oceanic forcings, namely microseisms. In addition dominant surface waves, these sources generate body waves that travel through the deep structures of our planet. Despite sources’ inherent complexity, interferometric methods allow isolating coherent for imaging applications. For a given station pair, only specific microseism events contribute illumination target. We propose an opportune workflow based on ocean sea state models extract robust interferences. This approach is illustrated with strong source in North Atlantic Ocean, occurring around December 9, 2014. Monitoring remote ocean waves using P-wave microseisms

Oceanic microseisms are generated by the interaction of opposing ocean waves and subsequent coupling with the seabed, so microseisms should contain information on the ocean conditions that generated them. This leads to the possibility of using seismic records as a proxy for the ocean gravity wavefield. Here we investigate the P-wave component of microseisms, which has previously been linked to ...

Surface wave tomography from microseisms in Southern California

[1] Since it has already been demonstrated that point-topoint seismic propagation Green Functions can be extracted from seismic noise, it should be possible to image Earth structure using the ambient noise field. Seismic noise data from 148 broadband seismic stations in Southern California were used to extract the surface wave arrival-times between all station pairs in the network. The seismic ...

Pelagic and coastal sources of P‐wave microseisms: Generation under tropical cyclones

[1] Nonlinear wave‐wave interactions generate double‐ frequency (DF) microseisms, which include both surface waves (mainly Rayleigh‐type) and compressional (P) waves. Although it is unclear whether DF surface waves generated in deep oceans are observed on land, we show that beamforming of land‐based seismic array data allows detection of DF P waves generated by ocean waves from Super Typhoon Io...

MPI- and CUDA- implementations of modal finite difference method for P-SV wave propagation modeling

Among different discretization approaches, Finite Difference Method (FDM) is widely used for acoustic and elastic full-wave form modeling. An inevitable deficit of the technique, however, is its sever requirement to computational resources. A promising solution is parallelization, where the problem is broken into several segments, and the calculations are distributed over different processors. ...
